A major exhibition by Carole Feuerman, Reborn into the Water, is currently on view at the iconic Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku through January 24, 2027. The exhibition presents more than 30 of Feuerman’s sculptures and offers a sweeping look at her artistic evolution—from early works created in the 1970s to the celebrated swimmer figures that have become her signature.
Feuerman is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of superrealist (hyperrealist) sculpture, known for her breathtakingly lifelike depictions of the human figure. Her swimmers—often shown wearing caps and goggles, droplets of water glistening on their skin—capture moments of stillness, resilience, and inner strength. Crafted in materials such as resin, painted bronze, and stainless steel, the sculptures demonstrate extraordinary technical mastery while exploring deeper themes of endurance, vulnerability, and transformation.
The exhibition’s title reflects the central role of water in Feuerman’s work. In her sculptures, water symbolizes renewal, healing, and the ability to move through life’s challenges. The figures appear suspended in a moment between movement and rest—inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the emotional and psychological resilience embodied by the human form.
Presented within the flowing architecture of the Heydar Aliyev Center—designed by legendary architect Zaha Hadid—the exhibition creates a powerful dialogue between sculpture and space. The building’s sweeping, wave-like forms echo the themes of water and movement found throughout Feuerman’s work, making it an especially fitting setting for this expansive presentation.
