Anthony James’s most popular series, Portals (2008-present), is his representation of Plato’s Theory of Forms. Plato believed the universe is made of five types of matter: earth, air, fire, water, and the cosmos or aether - which could be described in particular geometry. These shapes create the building blocks of the universe. Plato considered these shapes to be divine, lacking the flaws of humans and the physical realm; perfect forms with a higher order of existence than their physical representations.

The hexahedron or cube represents earth. With its stable base, it is the most immovable of all platonic solids; corresponding to the stability of earth or solid matter. The cube symbolizes a solid foundation and stability, while representing unity, balance, and connection.
The hexahedron can be used in meditation, healing practices, and art to promote grounding, stability, and a connection to the earth's energy.
Installation view of Lightfield (16x 24 inch Transmorphic Color Cubes), 2021, Powder-coated stainless steel, specialized glass, LEDs; Marble Arch Mound, London, UK
In 2021 James worked with the City of Westminster to bring his visionary world of light and geometry to new heights with Lightfield—a breathtaking large-scale installation unveiled at London’s Marble Arch Mound. Suspended between the natural and the otherworldly, Lightfield transformed the base of the Mound into a glowing landscape of infinite reflections and celestial symmetry. Composed of James’s signature cubes, crafted from stainless steel, glass, and custom-programmed LED lighting—the installation pulsed with color and energy, inviting visitors into a meditative exploration of light, space, and transcendence.
As one of the most visually arresting experiences at Marble Arch Mound, Lightfield captured the imagination of art lovers, passersby, and international media alike—cementing James’s reputation as a master of immersive, light-based sculpture.
The installation drew more than 250,000 visitors within the first three months on view.
Installation view of Square Roots (50 inch Brich Cube, 12x 24 inch Transmorphic Cubes); Saatchi Gallery, London, UK
Square Roots (2022), presented by Saatchi Gallery alongside the RHS Botanical Art and Photography show, featured James’s renowned Birch Tree series along with Lightfield. Using birch trees, mirrors, glass, metal, and fluorescent LED lights, James presents a sculptural series associated with magical symbolism, resulting in the illusion of an endless birch forest. Infinite and mesmerising, the twelve cubes were connected via ethernet cables and controlled by one computerised "brain" enabling them to mimic the interconnecting root structure of a birch tree forest.
Available in a dynamic selection of finishes, including powder-coated steel in a variety of colors, as well as brushed stainless steel and nickel-plated editions.
Anthony James, Dali Cube, Powder-coated stainless steel, specialized glass, LED, 69-90 inches
James's Dali Cube series stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, and spirituality. A Dali Cube refers to a hypercube or tesseract, a four-dimensional cube; a nod to Salvador Dalí's painting Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus).
The hypercube is used as a geometric symbol for God's transcendental nature and for the idea of moving beyond our three-dimensional understanding.
According to James, "Sacred geometry is the language of the universe, it doesn't really matter whether you're a child or a dean of the university, you're going to get something out of it because there's a unity of language that happens when we get sucked in by this sacred geometry."
