Ashley Collins, “Abbey Window”

How can a painter in oil create an installation honoring a photo negative?

The inspiration for this exhibition actually comes from the invention of photography. A man of quiet determination, Wiliam Henry Fox Talbot, created the very first photo negative. It captured, forever, a simple latticed window at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, now preserved in the archives of National Media Museum in Bradford, UK. Collins, whose deeply layered work always has had historical underpinnings, fulfilled her desire to create an installation to remind us how the smallest gesture by an unknown can alter the world.
