Born in La Spezia, Italy in 1961. Currently resides in Los Angeles.
Following the footsteps of Richard Diebenkorn and geometric abstraction, Marco Casentini creates serene, color-saturated works in which the elements of landscape are only barely discernable.
Using paints in dense alkyd or acrylic on canvas, each painting in his series is connected through color and compositional similarities. Casentini constructs each painting by using hard-edged rectangles. There is often a dominant yet subtle form, which acts as a foreground, while the surrounding forms successfully unify to establish spatial tension. The absence of a clear focal point allows the viewer to take in the painting as a whole. He plays with both subtle and striking juxtapositions in his color palette that leave the viewer with an impression or emotion, rather than a concrete image of the scene unfolding before them. His large gridded geometric abstractions connect with recent Southern California painters investigating themes of scale, color, grids, and clean lines. Following on recent RAM exhibits such as “Driven To Abstraction” and “Painting in Southern California in the 1980s,” Casentini’s work shows a new generation of artists drawing on Southern California themes of the “finish fetish,” minimalism, and geometric planes. He mixes the influences from his background painting in Italy and the architectural spaces there with the feel of the unending ocean and luminous sunlight throughout Southern California. All Around will consist of monumental, bright, geometric abstract paintings on canvas and painting directly on the wall. Casentini views his work as abstracted portrayals of the Southern Californian and Italian landscapes in which he resides.
Casentini exhibits internationally with galleries in Munich, London, Milan, Chicago, Los Angeles and Southern California.
