With his distinctive style and brilliant sun-drenched colors, Richard Baker’s paintings explore the effect of light and its absence on figures, scenery, and objects. Though representational, his compositions are simplified almost to the point of abstraction in a process the artist calls “Minimal Realism.” Visible brush strokes add a sculptural quality. The motifs presented in this show depict Coachella Valley events and recreation including golfing at Silver Rock, hiking at the La Quinta Cove, driving through Joshua Tree, polo at the Eldorado Club, the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, the Coachella Music Fest, and the HITS Desert Circuit Horse Show.
Richard Baker studied painting with the renowned artist Rackstraw Downes at the University of Pennsylvania. He is established in the entertainment business after a career as a television and film producer (“The Santa Clause” trilogy, “Drew Carey Show,” “Last Man Standing”), as well as the long time manager of such comedy performers as Tim Allen and Drew Carey.
